Ashaiman, 3 Tema constituencies declare support for Bawumia

Dr. Bawumia waves a big crowd of supporters

Four constituencies in the Greater Accra Region on Sunday threw their weights behind the flagbearership bid of Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

The four constituencies – Ashaiman, Tema East, Tema Central and Tema West – minced no words in publicly declaring their unflinching support to Dr. Bawumia’s bid to be elected New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer for next year’s presidential election.

Dr. Bawumia, who submitted his nomination forms to party officials to contest the flagbearership last Friday, has been on a campaign tour of the Greater Accra Region since then.

His visit on Sunday took him to the Ashaiman and all three Tema constituencies, where party faithfuls came out in their numbers to welcome him with massive receptions.

In front of their executives – from polling station level to constituency executives – respective Chairmen of the four constituencies, namely Gbeku Amanor of Ashaiman, Nene Ofoe Teye Agbadiagba of Tema East, Charles Boateng of Tema Central, and Kwesi Poku Bosompem of Tema West, declared support for Dr. Bawumia on behalf of their people.

Each declaration at every constituency was met with rapturous reaction of endorsement by the delegates.

The respective chairmen explained why their constituencies are throwing their weights behind the Vice President.

Each of them spoke about his loyalty to the party, hard work both in opposition and in government, his support of the party and his good character.

At Dr. Bawumia’s last engagement with party stakeholders at Tema West, the Constituency Chairman, Kwasi Poku Bosompem, summed up all the day’s endorsement with an emphatic comment.

“We know what Bawumia has done, we know what is good for the party and we know what is good for Ghana. It is Bawumia we want,” Kwesi Poku Bosompim said to a thunderous applause

I accepted blame for the energy crisis even though I didn’t cause it; Akufo-Addo doesn’t take responsibility – Mahama

Former President John Dramani Mahama has criticized President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for not taking responsibility for the economic challenges.

Mr Mahama explained that the first step to solving the problems is for the President to admit his fault and bring everybody around the table to solve them.

During a campaign tour and interaction with delegates of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) at Awutu Senya in the Central Region on Tuesday, March 27, he said when he was President of Ghana, he accepted blame for the energy crisis that hit the country and promised to solve it even though it was not his fault.

The same conduct he said cannot be said about President Akufo-Addo

“They don’t listen to advice, they don’t accept their mistake and so they are not able to learn from their mistakes. Still, they are not accepting responsibility for the woes of the Cedi.

“I didn’t cause the energy crisis, it was caused by a lack of generational addiction for many years but I went to Parliament and took responsibility for it and said I would fix it.

“That is what leadership is about but this is a president who can’t take responsibility

We don’t have any LGBTQ law in Ghana – Akufo-Addo corrects US journalist

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has dissociated from the Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill, popularly known as the Anti-Gay Bill, which is currently before Parliament.

Proposed under a Private Members’ Bill, the anti-gay bill is expected to criminalise some of the activities of homosexuals in Ghana.

Answering a question put to him at the Jubilee House on Monday, March 27 when US Vice President Kamala Harris called on him, President Akufo-Addo confirmed that the bill is currently before Parliament, which will decide on it, but most of its provisions are being fine-tuned.

“It hasn’t been passed, so the statement that there is a legislation in Ghana to that effect is not accurate,” he said.

“Parliament is dealing with it and at the end of the process, I will come in,” he added.

President Akufo-Addo welcomed US Vice President Harris to the seat of government as part the latter’s three-day visit to the country.

She stressed how strongly she feels about the importance of supporting and fighting for the cause of human rights including rights of LGBTQs.

“For the American press who are here, you know that a great deal of work in my career has been to address human rights issues, equality issues across the globe including as well as the LGBTQ community and I feel very strongly about the importance of supporting freedom and supporting and fighting for quality among all people

The Minority Leader Dr Cassiel Ato Forson has said he was profoundly disappointed with the outcome of proceedings in Parliament regarding the vote on the ministerial nominees.

“These MPs have demonstrated their unwavering commitment to the betterment of our society. Their tireless efforts to push for a reduction in the number of ministers are a testament to their dedication to our shared cause.”

The Ajuamko Enyan Essiam lawmakers further said in a statement that “While the outcome may not have been what we had hoped for, I believe we can still work together to achieve our goals. I remain hopeful that, by continuing to engage in constructive dialogue and collaboration, we can find a way forward that benefits all Ghanaians.

“Once again, I want to express my disappointment, but I am also grateful for the efforts of those who worked to represent our collective vision for a better Ghana. Let us continue to strive toward a brighter future.”

Dr Forson’s Deputy Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah also said the NDC) Members of Parliament (MPs) have to quickly reorganize themselves and move on following the defeat in Parliament on Friday, March 24 in the vote to approve the ministerial nominees.

He said he was naturally devastated following the results but woke up this morning feeling stronger and convinced that “we simply lost a battle and not the war.”

“We necessarily have to regroup and soldier on for there are many battles ahead and I know with God on our side we shall win the war in the end. The victory of the NDC is coming again and nothing can stop it,” the Ellembelle Lawmaker tweeted.

Meanwhile, Former President John Dramani Mahama has chastised the opposition MPs for secretly voting to approve the ministerial nominees of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

He said the MPs have “sorely disappointed” Ghanaians given the principled stance they took a few weeks ago to reject the nominees in order to force government to reduce its size.

“I am also disappointed,” he wrote on his official Facebook page on Saturday, March 25, a day after Parliament approved all six nominees following a secret ballot.

“Those responsible for this betrayal must do some serious soul searching and learn to place national interest over personal interest,” he demanded.

He also took on the Akufo-Addo-led government for missing an opportunity to reduce its size following the resignation of some ministers.

“Clearly in this time of crisis and excruciating hardships, President Akufo-Addo, his NPP administration and some of our MPs are out of tune with the mood of the Ghanaian people.”

He assured Ghanaians and all disappointed with the outcome of Friday’s proceedings in Parliament not to despair but to vote for him next year in order to “to work and build the Ghana we all want from January 07, 2025

All children who missed their scheduled vaccines are still eligible – GHS

Director General of the GHS, Dr Patrick Kumah-Aboagye

The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has said that all children who missed their scheduled vaccines are still eligible for vaccination following the arrival of vaccines.

“We want to take this opportunity to advise the public against buying of these vaccines.

“The vaccines are free and can be obtained in designated health facilities and all Child Welfare Clinics across the country,” a statement issued by the Director-General of the Service, Dr Patrick Kuma-Aboagye, said.

The Ministry of Health and the Ghana Health Service took delivery of the first consignment of vaccines for Bacillus Calmette–Guérin (BCG), Measles-Rubella (MR), and Oral Polio Vaccine (OPV) on Saturday, March 11.

This comes days after the sector minister, Kwaku Agyemang-Manu, assured the nation on the floor of Parliament about shipment of the vaccines.

“Mr Speaker, it is a very serious public interest issue, the assurance I will give and I can give for the first time in the chamber here is that this will not happen again,” the Dormaa Central Member said on Friday, March 10.

“I will advise that you will help me in my advocacy to get adequate funding for vaccines, even the health insurance budget. So when we meet with committees, they have always been talking about it, and even in the chamber, it has come up that if Parliament approves adequately for us and we always have our budget well we will be able to supply. I assure you that whatever challenges happened I don’t think we are going to face these challenges any longer.

“I can stand here and assure the House that within two weeks or three weeks we will get vaccines, even probably before that. I can’t get my hands on a specific date but probably even before that, we may get the vaccines that we are talking about. Throughout the period we have made 6.4million dollars equivalent to UNICEF who supplies us the vaccines.”

On Saturday, March 11, the Director-General of the Service, Dr Patrick Kuma-Aboagye, was on the tarmac of the Kotoka International Airport (KIA), leading the delegation to welcome in the consignment.

“Distribution to various regions and facilities [are] underway,” a post on the Ministry of Information Facebook page said.
